Dec 5 - Irv Wyner

Maybe I was a bit naive thinking I could go on on a daily basis and still get comments in time, so every now and then I leave out a day. There's no Dec 4 post, in case you wondered...

While Maurice Noble's background painter Phil DeGuard is relatively well-known for his highly recognizable work in Jones classics like What's Opera Doc (1957), background painter Irv Wyner brought a similar, sometimes even more radical coloring style to Hawley Pratt's stylized layouts. They worked together in the Freleng unit from 1952 until 1957. Much later, Wyner worked for Jones on specials like Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (1975).

Dec 2 - Tarzan [Updated]

Well, I've never thought that one day I would write about Tarzan. Yesterday I watched it for the first time ever since it was in theaters. Being one of my least favorite Disney films I've had no intention of seeing it again for a long time. But now in the light of the Glen Keane debate at Michael Sporn's Splog, I've decided to give it a closer look. And although I watched it focusing mainly on character design and animation (typical Keane poses in particular), I found something to write about concerning color. But first, it inspired me to today's color guessing question:

Advent Calender 2010 - Dec 1 [Updated]

It's this time of the year again and luckily I'm less busy than the past few months. So I try to do an Advent calender again. Most of it will be color guessing again (not all of it, though).

How the color guessing works: I post an image with one area completely desaturated or modified otherwise. Underneath there are several color propositions for the desaturated area. If you think you know the correct color, write a comment with the letter corresponding to the picture you think is correct. Of course you could always guess, it’s multiple choice after all. I will withhold comments for at least the day after, so that you don’t see what other people already have guessed. As long as you don't see any comments on a post you can still answer, even if the next one is already up.

Later I will also post the original image. There might also be additional questions like trivia or one or two "normal" posts inbetween.

If I get three answers I will continue, else I will stop posting those images.

I'm putting together a list of participants just for fun to see who got the most answers right.

Color guessing evaluation

First of all, thanks for your brisk participation. I was overwhelmed by the number of reactions to my first post since I didn’t really expect people to be interested in color guessing at all. I tried to be generous in acknowledging correct answers (if you mentioned the right color but typed the wrong letter, I count it as correct). I always enjoy reading about the thinking that leads to a certain choice. Some of your explanations for choosing this or that color were brilliant, even if they didn’t lead to a correct answer (because there’s never just one possible solution).

Although, as promised, I will provide a list of correct answers, the real benefit of the game – for me at least – was dealing with possible color choices and thus sharpening my perception.

A total of 24 people answered to at least one of the 18 questions. Many readers responded to only one question. Of these, only Hammy and Sergio also got their answers correct. Such a hit rate of 100% would technically make them winners ex aequo, which would be unfair to people with a steadier participation record, however.

Three people had a nip-and-tuck race going with only Aaron responding to all 18 posts (4 correct answers). Sunny Kharbanda delivered 4 correct answers out of 14 attempts. According to my calculations, we have a clear winner nonetheless: Soriah with 7 out of 15.

What impressed me most was the fact that she figured out all the eye colors of the Russian Jungle Book. A special mention goes to one-time participant Gio Renna for putting 4 of the 7 Roadrunner backgrounds in chronological order. Last but not least, Shannon Doran with 3 out of 7 correct answers also did quite well.

What color is the Virgin Mary wearing?

Ever since the Middle Ages, Mary is usually wearing blue (C).

This can be seen in most classic nativity scenes, three-dimensional or painted. Furthermore, red, green and blue is the color combination that symbolizes trinity, whereas green and blue point to the presence of Jesus. When talking about films, I don't like to dwell on the symbolic use of colors because symbolism usually is quite arbitrary. With religious paintings however, symbolic colors have been broadly established and were well-known among the people for centuries. Note how the blue coat contrasts the green skirt of the other woman, that wasn't really coming off as green in the picture above.

Dec 23: Lady and the Tramp [Updated]

What's the color of the present next to the ball (above Scamp's head)?

Despite all the christmas presents that are red and blue (blue is least obtrusive here, as the floor is also kind of blue), this one parcel is green (B) like the Christmas tree that is hardly visible in this framing.

 

In the wider shot it might not stand out because we only register the tree in background, in the closer framing it works well with the overall red-green Christmas theme.

Dec 22: Maugli - The Russian Jungle Book [Updated]

If you know me personally, then you are probably aware of my interest in all things Jungle Book. Although as a film critic I could give you a whole list of things that are wrong with Walt Disney's 1967 version of the book it all just doesn't matter to me; I adore it, no matter what.

For this post however, I have chosen some screenshots from Maugli, the Russian series by Roman Davydov. Made between 1966 and 1971 as a five-part series, it was assembled into a 95 minute feature (1973). At the same time, there was also a charming Russian version of Winnie the Pooh.

 Many of the animals have different eye colors that are constant throughout the picture.

Which of the colors A-E correspond with the eyes of the following characters 1-5?
